HOMEWORK ASSIGNED

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT POLICY

Homework will be assigned every two to three weeks. There will be total of five home assignments. Some assignments will involve analysis of a news or opinion article on the issues covered in the class. The readings will be provided for some assignments, while for others you will be asked to find an article. One assignment, in the first half of the semester, will be a short research paper writing assignment. One assignment, in the second half of the semester, will be based on the Integrated Science Assessment Model (ISAM), a computer model available over the web.

The purpose of the homework is to give you practice in thinking through, presenting, and discussing problems in preparation for the midterm and final exams. The homework should act as a study guide for the exams. Therefore, the following format is required:
  • Restate the problem in your own words (don’t copy it from the problem statement).
  • Make a list of variable definitions and draw a coordinate system, if it helps to explain the problem.
  • Solve the problem, including text which briefly explains what you are doing and why. Use appropriate units in the solution. If you use a spreadsheet for repeated calculations, illustrate an example calculation in detail.
  • Explain what the answer means or what you learned from the problem. (Even if the problem doesn’t explicitly ask for a discussion, you should include one)

LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY

Effective with Homework 1, the late assignment policy (for homework) is as follows:

Late assignment may be turned without penalty until 5 pm on the day after the due date. That is, if the assignment is due on Monday, it can be turned in by Tuesday at 5 pm without penalty. This should allow you some flexibility in scheduling your workload.

Assignment turned in after the grace period will be penalized 5% for each late day including weekends, up to a maximum of 30%. If the assignment is not turned within 6 days after the grace period, you will get 0 points. For example, if the assignment is due on Monday, and you turn it before 5 pm on Wednesday, you will lose 5%. If you turn it by the following Monday, you will lose 30% of the total points. Thereafter you will get zero points. This will give you some incentive to get the assignment in on time.

Late assignments can be turned in during class time, or you can drop them off in my mailbox in 105 South Gregory Street.
